The Rani originally named Ushas and later known as the Rani of Miasimia Goria—was a renegade Time Lady and a former member of the Deca. A brilliant but morally detached neurochemist, she studied alongside the Doctor and the Master during their youth on Gallifrey. While she became a determined adversary of the Doctor, her relationship with the Master was marked by reluctant collaboration.
Driven by her scientific ambitions, the Rani believed that achieving her goals justified any means, often showing little regard for ethical boundaries. Though she occasionally displayed dark humor, she had little patience for the Doctor’s idealism. Despite her cold pragmatism, she demonstrated some hesitation when it came to violating the Laws of Time.
Exiled from Gallifrey after a failed experiment mutated lab mice into dangerous creatures, she established her base on the planet Miasimia Goria. There, she conducted unethical experiments on the local population and made trips to Earth to extract human brain fluid for her research. Her schemes were repeatedly interrupted by the Doctor and, at times, by the Master. One such plan—to merge the minds of the universe’s greatest intellects into a single brain—was thwarted when the Doctor and the Tetraps trapped her inside her own TARDIS.
In a separate storyline, during a reflective moment as Ruby shares childhood memories with her family, a mysterious figure named Flood appears atop their house. Dressed in white and holding an umbrella, Flood addresses the audience directly, concluding Ruby’s story and ominously hinting at the Doctor’s future, declaring that his tale will end “in absolute terror.”
